The delicate blue flowers of my forget-me-nots dotting my garden floor… The anticipation of my lilacs blooming… The black-capped chickadee innocently hopping from one branch to another… The kids hanging on my every word as I answer their questions about what each plant is… The thrill I get from dividing plants and sharing… The sound of my pond when I first get it running… Having to set the automatic outside lights to go on well after 9pm due to longer days… The re-arrival to Michigan of my parens from Fla. Just to name a few…Carol

Wow…whatta topic.  My things: Going out into my front yard at 3AM and hearing the owls talking to each other…The flame-orange tulips I planted last fall, now 3 ft. tall and in full bloom…Catching my (non-gardening) wife admiring my handiwork… Watching said wife when she doesn’t know I’m watching her… My most favorite band in the world, Erasure…The ear-to- ear grin on my (18 mo.) nephew’s face when he sees me, and the smell of his hair…The full moon, hanging like a huge tangerine on the horizon…The scent of hyacinths and lilacs in bloom…My parents…People who DO give a damn…My life finally coming together (nice, ain’t it Vic?)… and…hmm…oh yeah – garlic, tomatoes, and basil, preferably together.  The love and respect of my children so soon in our lives together……The friendship and trust between my husband and i……the wonder of a poppy with the green cap barely hanging onto bright colors, and then exploding into this incredible paper thin, delicate fabric……Sitting outside here on my hill and listen to the eagles, hawks, and other sounds of life around me……The gentle sounds of all my different windchimes in various places in my gardens……Each day that i wake to find more wonderous things pushing thru the seasonal smells of rains, the clean, sharp cold smell of an early Spring rain, and the heavy, rich smell of Summer rains, and the musty cleansing smell of Fall rains, and the taste of the last rains just before the cold the insects, for the wonder of how they connect us to nature, and life, and how they can be so small and yet so forceful, and constant, and everlasting……the miracle of the tiny seed to inspire wonder in me at the plant or flower that that tiny little recepticle holds locked into that casing……the bulbs, for the joys that they give me in their own seasons……. living on this wonderful world where everyone can make their own little was still young. The "sting" of muscles used again after months of hibernation. The excitement in my son’s eyes when I say…"lets work in the garden". The warm glow I feel when my husband comes home from work and says…" WOW the yard looks great!". The joy of seeing "old friends" flourish…and "new friends" get comfortable. My tiny little yard (no lawn, all garden) in the midst of an industrial area in Cambridge Seeing the peony buds popping up in the spring Having such a bumper crop of tomatoes that I *have* to give some to my neighbors Watching, then smelling, my dog when he rolls in the creeping thyme (yum!) Pesto, with my own basil Late afternoon, relaxing in the fragrant shade of my rosebushes. Mmmmmm . . . the first bud the first leaf the first flower the first fruit the first bird and, of course, the sound of peepers -Diana – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Don: Does this mean that you’re *not* about to buy some fiberglass sports car or the Boatoya Land Crusher WUV (War Utility Vehicle)? How dare you age so well? What the hell is wrong with you? Small hand tools – expecially a little 3-prong rake Not me, man. I’m still digging it all out by hand with a spade. Of course, it *is* a new place. Small hand tools with bright-color handles Red works well, unless you are red/green color blind. Or just Red Green. If you *are* Red Green, come on over to my place, I have some adventures in mind. Gee, "Adventures with Bill". Could be something to that idea. I assume that it was very frustrating to try to find that green-handled pruner that you set down "for a moment" in the grass. Next to the splendor, no doubt. Individual strawberry plants with fewer big berries, rather than tangled beds and many little berries Interesting point. The best strawberries I ever ate were wild ones. Tiny, tiny, berries. But when you talk about grocery-store berries, forget it. Home grown berries rule, regardless of size. They ain’t cardboard, y’know. The cool early hours of the day for working in the yard Evenings for me. The evening hours for sitting on the back patio with a beer That works. Old dogs Hey, mine is only 6. With her breed, that could mean another 23 years. Someday, she’ll be old. Me too, by then. Young cats Or the neighborhood rabbit killer. Don’t see him much. Do see the results. Flowers (farm boys just grew eatin’ stuff – not posies!) Yeah, like any farm family you knew didn’t have a few flowers here and there. Mostly low-care perennials and re-seeders. Old-fashioned hollyhocks were nice. Making yourself wait for certain dates on the calendar before setting out tender plants Using certain dates on the calendar for excuses to party. The smell and feel of real good soil Yep. The smell of roasting peppers. Still the best garden-related smell of all time. Regards, Bill — Center for Room Temperature Confusion
